Dry Eye Treatments

Radiofrequency energy used to heat the eyelids and melt the meibum within the meibomian glands, the glands are then expressed. About 80% of dry eye syndrome is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Meibomian gland dysfunction occurs when the meibomian glands become blocked or clogged by thick secretions. This impacts the normal flow of oil into the tear film and affects the quantity and quality of your tears— the cause of your dry eye symptoms.
This non-invasive, in-office procedure generally takes around 45 minutes to complete. This includes RF of the skin surrounding the eye and RF over the eye with the use of protective corneal shields. Once at the melting point, the impacted meibum is expressed from the meibomium glands.
Optimal results are typically noticed after 3 to 4 treatments, which are usually spaced over 2 to 4 weeks.
You may notice some redness and mild swelling around your eyes for a couple of hours after your RF procedure. It is a good idea to avoid exposing the area to additional heat until your skin has returned to its normal color and the swelling has gone down.
