ENSURING CLEAR VISION FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE

At Lakeview Optometry, we believe that early eye care is essential for your child's development and well-being. Catching vision problems early can make a significant difference in your child's learning and overall quality of life. But when is the right time to book your child's first eye exam? Let's explore the recommended guidelines for children's eye exams in Alberta.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY EYE EXAMS

Children rely heavily on their vision for learning and exploring the world around them. Undiagnosed vision issues can lead to difficulties in school, social interactions, and even physical development. Regular eye exams ensure that any potential problems are identified and treated early, giving your child the best chance for clear, healthy vision.

RECOMMENDED EYE EXAM SCHEDULE

The Alberta Association of Optometrists recommends the following eye exam schedule for children:

1. First Eye Exam at 6 to 9 Months: Your baby's first eye exam should be between 6 to 9 months of age. At this stage, the optometrist will check for any early signs of vision issues, eye alignment, and overall eye health. It's a gentle and non-invasive way to ensure your baby's eyes are developing correctly.

2. At Least Once Between Ages 2 to 5 Years: Between the ages of 2 and 5, it's important to have at least one comprehensive eye exam. This is a critical period for visual development, and early detection of issues like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes) can prevent long-term problems.

3. Annual Exams for Ages 6 to 19 Years: Children should have an eye exam once a year. As they grow and their visual demands increase with school and activities, regular check-ups ensure their vision stays sharp and healthy. Annual exams can help detect changes in vision that might require glasses or other interventions.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR CHILD'S EYE EXAM

During your child's eye exam, our friendly and experienced team will conduct a series of tests to assess their vision and eye health. These exams are designed to be comfortable and engaging for children. We'll check for refractive errors (like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism), eye coordination, focusing ability, and overall eye health.
